American Idol in Hollywood - Day 1 and 2

Barry Manilow? Really? He's on every single American Idol episode and I'm just not sure what purpose he serves as a mentor. The judges are always emphasizing how important it is to be new and original - and they they bring this completely ancient and irrelevant "surprise" guest. Over it.

I didn't appreciate how we didn't get to see all the people sing. I would rather have heard snippets of their auditions, than snippets of the judges comments. I picked up on the fact that there wasn't a lot of suspence within the lines.

Let's get into it:

Lil Rounds - Is that a stage name? Also, WHAT is with this season and Whitney Houston? I thought she was ok - kind of sounds generic.

Dennis Brigham - You are not good at all. I thought his facial expressions were quite scary. I'm glad Simon agreed with me. Also, don't start with the judges. Take the criticism and move on.

Nathaniel Marshall - First glance, he's a joke - but when you hear him sing, it really is a beautiful sound that comes out. I don't think he has "the look" at all. Also, can we talk about his monologue? After a really nice review from the judges, homeboy says,"I...I just want this. More than anything. It's on my skin...like it just BURSTS out of me everytime I'm on stage and I don't know why." I mean, WHAT?

Did anyone notice that Paula Abdul's necklace was dominatrix-esque with a chain that was was attached to a cuff bracelet?

Anoop Desai - This is the "dork" version of Kumar, if you recall. I was really digging his new look and thought he did a great job.

Jasmine Murray - She really does have natural talent, but it still sounded a bit screechy to me.

Rose Flack - She doesn't think she has a good voice and her confidence was shattered. Pick up or shut up. You got on stage, you sang and you were AMAZING. Love your voice.

During this group's audition I was pumped with the prospect of having some suspence in who will make it through - but alas, they all did. Well done.

Stephen Fowler - He's a little bit a of a "soul"ja boy. Me dig him. Randy said he slayed it. Aww...slay season!

Jorge Nunez - get rid of the accent. And when you win, don't sing in Spanish

Von Smith - you're not good. You're screaming. I cannot believe you got through. You'll be gone tomorrow.

Norman/Nick Gentle - At first I thought he was joking. I thought it was fully an act and actually gave him silent praise for getting on national television and behaving in this manner. Then I thought, I would TOTALLY do something like this. Anyway, suprisingly he makes it through - but I agree with Simon's theory on him. He's either dressed up and funnyboy or dressed down and boring. He could be attractive, thought. No?

HOLLYWOOD - DAY 2... after a serious Ford Product Placement. Sneakyness.

Jackie Tohn - I really really like you. You're pretty and you look like Kim Sica. You have an awesome, interesting voice and I think you'll definitely make it to the Top 24. I especially loved your "Not bye bye -- hello."

Jamar Rogers - Your voice is amazing. You're making it. Places.

Danny Gokey - I'm in love with you. You're such a great singer and I cry just looking at you. You're in the Top 12. You heard it here first.

Katrina Darrell - Ok, now I don't think she's good at all - but I do think she's being unfairly judged. Cara is CLEARLY jealous of Katrina and at the time of her facetious comments, she's probably thinking she's so cool, since she's in a power role, but trust me, when she watched herself tonight, she was embarrassed. (That was quite a long sentence) She got through.

Jeremy Michael Sarver - You have an amazing voice, but you should powder your face before you go out on stage.

Jesus Valuenzuela - Weak. You're not powerful enough. Goodbye.

Emily Wynne-Humme - She has natural beauty beneath that crazy hair and what not, but she is not a really good singer. She made it though, but will be cut tomorrow.

See you then!
