Coho Bots and other annoying creatures

The other night, I was online writing and checking out digg.com. All of a sudden, I got an IM from a strange name. I chose the "display" option and up popped this pretty funny message. I wrote back, apologizing for not knowing the IMmer and asked for a reminder. Well, a whole new world unraveled for me. Apparently, there is a new "bot" thing that LINKS people together via IM. It's the weirdest thing everrrrr. Turns out the same bot, called COHO BOT, IMed my IMmer too - who was a 21-year-old attending Ohio State. Does this all make sense to you or are you as confused as I was when this was all going down?

Basically, you'll get a random instant message from a user with screen names in the form of "*adjective*Coho" as someone else gets a similar IM -- linking the two of you together. So, it's not a BOT per se, but an actual person who writes back. The way the bot works is it sends a messages to two different random screennames. Those two screen names are then linked for that session, where real screen names aren't used, but instead the *adjective*COHO one. Clearly, it connects two users that have no idea what the program is, and confusion thereby follows, especially becuase both users think the first IM came from the other person.

Futher explanation as "official" as Wikipedia allows may be found here: Who's IMming Me???

You're welcome.
