Remember the days of flirtation during high school when phone calls were the IT thing between you and your crush? I mean, even your friends! I remember being on the phone with Jackie D'Argenio for HOURS and not talking -- just 'watching tv togehter.' Looking back it's just weird. I should have been reading a book or something. But yea, with boys - forget it - I could stay on the phone forever.
Who even uses their cell phone to talk anymore? I'm really serious about this. Think about the communication between you and your friends. Usually, it's through texts or emails - which allows you to multi-task. So, you can honestly say "I'm talking to my friend," but really you're texting with them, while watching the lost footage of Real Housewives of New York. You hear what I'm saying here? Multi-tasking is of real importance to people. Between Tweeting their activities by the minute, and any other social obligations -- no one has TIME to talk on the phone anymore. Granted, if you're walking home from work - or to the train - etc., of course maybe you'll chitty chatty...but when you get home, it's over. I don't really think my parents understand this - especially being technologically-challenged. My mom will get really upset when I don't call her everyday and even have the audacity to claim I don't love her. Dear Galina, I really just don't like the phone. I love you more than a fat kid love cake. It's not you, it's me. Love, your daughter. Also, I really can't take an hour out of my schedule to catch up with Lauryn Kahn out in the West Coast, all the while trying to match our schedules with a three hour time difference. Truly, it's exhausting. And I miss her. But I digress.
I recently met a boy who, after talking on IM for a few days, asked for my number. I willingly gave it to him, but painstakingly knew that I'd have to dedicate some quality tick-tocks. Our phone conversation actually wasn't that bad - I enjoyed it - but is weird that to me, it's like an event - a "to-do" if you will...
My point is - I don't really talk on the phone anymore. No one does. I'm convinced. Talking on the phone was cool before AIM away messages, Facebook Status Messages and of course, Twitter. I mean, why am I going to call you to see what you're doing when I know you're "illen by the pool with SPF 4 tanning oil!" -- I'm not. And that's that.
I definitely don't talk on the phone anymore. I don't even own a landline!
ReplyDeleteI only call someone when it's too elaborate to type into a text or email....which is rarely the case.
ReplyDeleteWow I'm shocked I actually have cell conversations with a lot of people from 7 min to all the way up to an hour. Of course thats just me. And we khans have a tendency to be a bit chatty.
